Training

This training is designed to cross train medical and legal professional at the same time allowing them to understand each other’s roles and to effectively team.

Medical Topics to be covered include:

  • Role of the Child Abuse Medical Provider
  • Abusive Head Trauma
  • Abdominal and cutaneous traumas
  • Guidelines and standards of care for possible SA victims
  • Genital findings
  • Testifying as a medical expert
  • Hearsay
  • Memory and suggestibility
  • Mock trial for the medical professional

  • Trial tactics
  • Ethical considerations
  • Direct and cross examination of witnesses
  • Preparing children for court
  • Role of the Medical Provider
  • Abusive head, abdominal and cutaneous trauma
  • Child sexual abuse

  • Mock trial

Faculty for this training includes:

Members of the staff of NDAA/APRI

Legal Experts will provide faculty to present the legal aspects of the training:

Mary E. Sawicki, J.D., Project Consultation for NCPCA

Nancy E. O'Malley, Chief Assistant Alameda County District Attorney

Judge Rosa Mroz, Superior Court Maricopa County, Phoenix, Arizona will preside over the mock trial.


Medical Expertise will be provided by the Midwest Regional Children's Advocacy Center a Project of the Children's Hospitals and Clinics of Minnesota.

Each participant will receive a notebook of resource materials, and will benefit from networking opportunities with colleagues from across the country.

Course Fee
$700.00 Includes tuition, lodging, breakfast and lunch. Financial assistance may be available if you register as a team. Please contact your regional CAC for scholarship information.

Participants are responsible for their own transportation, hotel, and per diem expenses. Financial Assistance: There are a limited number of scholarships and travel stipends from your Regional Centers. Please contact your Regional Center for information.

Application Deadline: June 1, 2010
